Wood Elf Warriors

Wood Elf Warriors

As I mentioned in my articles on Thranduil, King of the Mirkwood Elves and Legolas, Prince of the Mirkwood Elves, the Elves of Mirkwood are a favorite theme of mine from Middle Earth.  They were the first army of Good that I built up past about 250 points in SBG and were my first force to grow in War of the Ring.

They are represented in the game as highly skilled but lightly armored forces.

The Model

The Wood Elves currently come in a box set of plastic models - 8 with bow, 8 with spear and 8 with sword.  Each of those three have a few poses between them which actually provides some decent variety to the force when viewed on the table.

As you'll see below, while painting my Wood Elves, I tried to keep a consistent feel to the models without making them look "uniformed" to one extreme or too random at the other.  So I used basic woodland earth tones (a couple greens, grays and browns) and intermixed these across their cloaks, tunics and leggings.  For a couple I have done some minor conversion work to give even more variety.  The most obvious examples are a few that I modified to look like they are holding their Throwing Daggers as well as spears (they originally used either bows or blades).  These were done specifically to make the models completely WYSIWYG for the the 2008 Games Day event in Baltimore, MD, but I loved the effect.  If I had some more time I would do several more like this.  As it is though, my next significant effort in Wood Elves and converting them will be to make a full box of 24 into a large force of Wood Elf Sentinels for my growing War of the Ring army.
