Forces of Good - Dain's Last Stand - 18Jun11

WotR Army Lists: Dain's Last Stand - 18 Jun 2011

Forces of Good

The following is a summary of the forces deployed by Joe, Brian and John in the Dains Last Stand - 18Jun11 scenario.  I can't speak fully to the thoughts behind this force design but as they were fighting a hold-the-line scenario there was obviously considerable thought put to defense in depth.  It was packed up with tough, core warriors and layered with some tough ranged punch to soften the incoming forces.

Much of the points went to a mighty Battlehost lead by Dain.   The two balista were creatively kept in separate Formations (this added to the Common Formation requirement but allowed them to be placed separately and proved very effective).  Most Formations had a Captain which many power-gaming army builders would point out as a problem, but it really isn't under most non-tournament games.  There are so many Formations in this army that if someone did try to take the Dwarves out with Epic Strike / Heroic Duel combos you would need a pool of over a dozen Might.  Meanwhile the Dwarf captains allowed At The Double and some Heroic actions as well as giving the Good forces the ability to Duel when it was in their favor.  I think there were maybe two Duels initiated by the forces of Evil that took out a few Dwarf models, but for the most part the Captains did more good than harm.  Likewise the Hornblowers are well used in a Dwarf army to compensate for some of their mobility issues.  I think the Banners were the only expense in this army that could have been cut but they looked good, they did allow a couple rerolls that helped and in a 3000 point army having 70 points in Banners is really insignificant.

The Stonework Fortune really paid off as it toughened up one of the defensible terrain features even more and these were the key to slowing down the forces of Sauron.  The Master Craftsman fortune was pobably not as needed, as the Dwarf players forgot it a few times that they wanted to use it, and when it was used (against the Troll Chief) the results were practically overkill.

Overall though it was a great looking, impressively sized and tough force to face.
